Oceania is the smallest of the seven continents and has a surface area of 8,525,989 km² (3,291,903 square miles). The population is about 40,117,432 people as of 2016 making it the least populous of the populated continents. With a peak of 4,509 meters (14,793.31 feet) above sea level, Mount Wilhelm is the highest point on the Oceanic countries and is located in Papua New Guinea. Lake Eyre is Oceania’s lowest point at 15 meters (49 feet) below sea level. It is located in Australia. Humans arrived to the remote islands during the Ice Age when they were all connected. The islands separated by little strips were crossed with their canoes and the islanders lived a peaceful life until Europeans came and claimed the islands as theirs. Some major cities are Sydney, Melbourne, Auckland, Port Moresby, Dili, & Gold Coast.
